Message from the Chairman

Welcome to the Hong Kong Music Series and thank you for joining us on this special occasion, which forms part of the celebrations of the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.

In recent years, Hong Kong’s cultural scene has undergone rapid growth. With an increasing number of outstanding artists creating high quality works in Hong Kong in the past few decades, the Hong Kong Arts Development Council (HKADC) believes it is now the right time to help our home-grown artists to reach out and perform on the international stage.

On behalf of the Hong Kong Arts Development Council, I am delighted to present to you a three-week music festival to showcase such vibrancy and diversity, produced and performed by Hong Kong’s finest music makers. Discover the creativity and dynamism that typifies Hong Kong’s culture, in five exceptional and diverse productions, ranging from classical to contemporary music, and with both Chinese music theatre and chamber opera. Through our unique sound and voice, we aim to share with Londoners and visitors our passion for the arts, as well as creating a musical dialogue and forging new cultural exchanges between our two great cities, Hong Kong and London.

Our sincere gratitude goes to our major sponsor, the Hong Kong SAR Government under which our host Bureau, the Home Affairs Bureau joins hands with the Commerce and Economic Development Bureau (Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office, London). We also greatly thank our London sponsors, Pure Land Foundation and Swire Group, in enabling us to achieve this mission in fullness. Along with the entire team of the Council and all the artistic groups, I would particularly like to express our deepest thanks to our Honourable Artistic Consultant of the Music Series, the late soprano Ms. Barbara FEI, who served the Council as the Chair of HKADC’s Music Group for over 20 years. We are indebted to her leadership in formulating the Music Series and I am sure she will hear our great music in heaven.

Finally, I would like to thank you for being part of our Music Series. We look forward to sharing with you our unique Hong Kong culture. Have a good time ahead and enjoy our music!
